Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception
The air inside the shop smelled of dried lavender and clean linen. A display of silk wraps hung on a wooden pegboard near the counter, catching the weak morning light from the front window. I touched a dusty-pink scarf, then a deep blue one that matched the color of Maribel’s favorite winter coat.
“These are fifty dollars for a set of three,” the woman behind the counter said.
I opened my purse and pulled out my small white savings envelope. I had exactly sixty-two dollars left in my personal emergency fund after paying the deposit on the wedding invitations.
“We will take the blue, the cream, and the lavender,” I said, sliding the fifty-dollar bill across the glass counter.
The woman wrapped the scarves in white tissue paper and slid them into a small paper bag.
“Do you think she will wear them?” Sarah asked as we walked back to the car.
“Well, we are going to find out right now,” I said.
The driveway of the brick cottage was empty when Sarah dropped me off. I walked up the porch steps, holding the small paper bag against my side to keep the wind from tearing the paper.
