Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception
“Thank you, Evelyn,” I said. “I know we both just want the wedding to be wonderful.”
“Exactly,” Evelyn said, tapping her fingers rapidly against her leather purse strap. “To show you there are no hard feelings, I want to pay for all the ceremony flowers myself. The white roses, the altar arrangements, everything. Have you called the florist back? Did they confirm the delivery time? Is the arbor ready?”
She did not wait for me to answer before she walked over to the mahogany desk near the window.
“Let us look at the seating chart one more time,” Evelyn said, pulling a sheet of paper from her binder.
I walked over and looked down at the grid she had drawn in blue ink.
In the box for the head table, right next to Mason’s name, Maribel’s name had a thin pencil line drawn straight through it.
In the margin next to the table in the very back corner, Evelyn had written Maribel’s name with a small question mark next to it.
“Why is she moved to the back?” I asked, pointing to the margin.
