“She has been very careful with her medical care for fifty years,” Mr. Davis said, his voice quiet. “I have to respect her privacy, kids.”

“Is she on something new?” Mason asked, his voice cracking slightly. “Just tell us if we should be worried.”

“I can tell you that Maribel is very looking forward to October twelfth,” Mr. Davis said, refusing to meet his eyes.

He turned back to his computer screen, his keyboard clicking in the quiet shop, ending the conversation.

We stood there for a long moment, the silence growing heavier between us.

Mason turned toward the exit, his heavy leather boots squeaking on the linoleum.

“He knows something,” Mason said as we reached the sidewalk.

“Well, of course he does,” I said. “But he is bound by his job.”

“We should go see her,” Mason said, unlocking the car doors. “We need to ask her directly.”

“She is not going to tell us if we corner her,” I said.

We found Maribel in her backyard garden, sitting on the green iron bench near her rose bushes.
