“Well, you are ahead of schedule, Maribel,” I said, setting my purse on the small side table.

“I wanted to make sure everything was ready before the traffic started on Friday,” she said. Her voice was thin, the short, breathless sentences coming quicker than they used to. She adjusted her blue silk scarf with trembling fingers, pulling the edge down to make sure her left temple was completely covered.

“We have plenty of time,” I said. “The rehearsal is tomorrow, and you don’t need to be at the church until noon on Saturday.”

“I don’t want to be a burden, Clara,” she said, looking down at her small cardboard suitcase on the sofa. “If Evelyn needs my seat at the main table for the florist’s helpers, I can sit in the back row. Really, it is fine.”

“Well, you are sitting at the head table, right next to Mason,” I said. I walked over to the closet and took down the cream dress, feeling the soft, heavy weight of the fabric. “And you are going to look beautiful.”
