Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception

I looked at the windshield of her car, noting the thick layer of autumn dust that had gathered near the wipers. “Have you been inside to see her lately?”

Evelyn adjusted her purse on her shoulder, her gaze shifting down the street. “I am very busy with the planning, Clara.”

I realized then that her car had not been in this driveway since the weekend before last.

My fingers gripped the plastic ridges of the steering wheel as I sat in my own quiet car, deciding whether to tell Mason about the medical pamphlet.

I drove straight to our apartment, the green medical pamphlet heavy in my coat pocket.

Mason was sitting at the kitchen table, grading high school history quizzes with a red felt pen.

The wedding program proofs were stacked beside his elbow, tied with the forty-five dollar satin ribbon I had ordered last week.

Well, I did not wait for him to finish the page he was grading.

I laid the paper down right over his red-inked scores.

“What is this?” he asked, his pen hovering.
