“Oh, that is just a backup plan,” Evelyn said quickly, sliding her hand over the paper to cover the writing. “We have to be prepared for any changes on the day of. Now, are we still on track for the fitting at two?”
I looked at Evelyn’s calm smile and felt my voice catch in my throat, but I nodded anyway.
By two in the afternoon, the bridal shop on Main Street was filled with the scent of lavender soap.
Maribel was already there, sitting on the velvet bench with her new blue silk scarf tied neatly around her head.
“Look at this dress, Clara,” Maribel said, her voice breathless but happy as she stood up. “It fits like a glove.”
She smoothed the cream-colored lace of the skirt down her hips, smiling at her reflection in the three-way mirror.
Evelyn came out from the changing rooms, holding a garment bag. “You look beautiful, Mom. Doesn’t she look beautiful, Clara? Is the hem right? Do we need to take the waist in?”
“You really do, Maribel,” I said, walking over to touch the delicate lace sleeve of her dress.
