Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception

She stopped at the very edge of the wood, where the carpet ended.

“Mom,” Evelyn said, her voice small and tight.

She looked at me, her eyes moving from my bald head to the blue silk scarf lying on the floor. She did not ask any rapid-fire questions this time. She stood there in her structured mother-of-the-bride dress, looking like a woman who had suddenly realized she was standing on the wrong side of a very important line.

“Clara, I am so sorry,” she whispered, her voice shaking. “I was just… I wanted everything to be so perfect for them.”

I looked at her, remembering the anger I had felt when she tried to move Maribel’s seat, and the resentment she had hidden about how much care her mother needed. I could have pointed out how much pain she had caused, or how she had tried to minimize the head table just to keep Maribel in the shadows.

But looking at her now, with her shoulders hunched and her face lined with genuine shame, I realized that anger would not fix anything.
