“I am sorry, but there is no one else to cover the desk,” she said. “You can still make the ceremony on Sunday.”

“The rehearsal is when we walk through the ceremony with Maribel,” I said. “She needs to see where she is going, and she needs to feel comfortable with the steps.”

“You will have to run through it on Sunday morning before the guests arrive,” Mrs. Gable said, turning her attention back to her keyboard. “I cannot change the schedule now.”

“Can we ask Sarah to cover?” I asked.

“Sarah is already working forty hours that week,” Mrs. Gable said. “I am sorry, Clara. This is a library, not a private venue.”

I stood in the doorway for a moment, waiting for her to look up, but she only clicked her mouse and adjusted a stack of catalog cards. My standing in the scheduling pool was not enough to override her decision, and the realization felt like a quiet weight in my chest.

I went back to my cart, but the green spine labels on the books blurred together as I pushed them into the shelves.
