“Then we cancel the formal family photos entirely,” Evelyn said, looking at the silver rim of the dish in her hand. “No portraits. No group shots before the ceremony. We will just have the photographer do the couple and the wedding party.”

“We cannot just erase her from the day,” Mason said, his fingers rubbing his collarbone.

“It is the only sensible solution to avoid any embarrassment,” Evelyn said, turning her back to us to slide a stack of plates into the cupboard. “If there are no family photos, there is no pressure on her to look a certain way.”

“We are not hiding her,” I said.

Evelyn closed the cupboard door with a firm click that echoed in the quiet kitchen. “I will call Mr. Vance myself to adjust the contract.”

“Evelyn, this is her last major family memory,” I said.

“I am not going to discuss this while you are both so worked up,” Evelyn said, reaching for her cold tea. “I have a meeting with the caterer in twenty minutes.”
