My Family Tried to Evict Me from the Craftsman House My Grandparents Left Me

“I protected my grandfather’s house,” I said. “Just like he told me to do.”

Ashley looked up, her eyes wide and wet, though there were no tears on her cheeks. “Emily, please. If the title company goes to the district attorney, they will arrest me. You have to tell them you signed it. You have to help me.”

I looked at her, remembering the forced lock on Grandfather’s desk and the surveyor on my lawn. I did not say a word.

“We can settle this,” Helen said, her voice rising in a desperate, pleading pitch. “We will return the savings. Charles will sign the release forms right now.”

“The savings are Emily’s personal property,” Richard said. “But the forgery is a criminal matter. The trust cannot shield Ashley from a third-party lender’s fraud investigation.”

Ashley reached out, her fingers catching the edge of the trust agreement as if she could make it disappear by holding it. Her face was entirely bloodless now, her lips parted in silent panic.
