“I can bring the folders by next week,” I said, though I had no intention of letting him see the trust documentation.

“The sooner the better, Emily,” he said. “We want to make sure your personal assets are completely protected before the winter season begins.”

He closed his folder with a soft thud, the sound carrying a strange finality in the quiet room.

“We want to make sure there are no surprises with the county recorder,” he added, looking directly at me.

“I have everything under control,” I said.

“I am sure you do,” Charles said, his voice remaining smooth and measured. “But a second pair of eyes never hurts when there is so much at stake.”

The sliding glass door to the backyard squeaked as my sister, Ashley, stepped out onto the concrete patio, holding a glass of iced tea. The sun was slipping behind the garage, casting long, gray shadows across the manicured lawn.

“It is getting cool out here,” she said, sliding into the metal chair opposite mine.
