My Family Tried to Evict Me from the Craftsman House My Grandparents Left Me
“You are being incredibly selfish, Emily,” Ashley said. “You are sitting in a four-bedroom house that could be funding our future, just because you want to play house.”
“The house belonged to Grandfather Thomas,” I said, keeping my voice at a level, measured volume. “He wanted me to live there.”
“He was eighty-eight and confused,” Ashley said. She reached back to rearrange her hair, pulling the dark strands over her left shoulder. “You practically forced him to sign those papers before he passed.”
“He was perfectly lucid, Ashley. I have the medical logs from his home nurse.”
“Numbers and logs do not change the fact that you are locking your own family out,” Ashley said, her voice rising as she looked toward our parents. “You are acting out of pure greed, and you know it.”
My mother kept her eyes on her plate, smoothing her linen napkin over her skirt with both hands. She smoothed the fabric over her lap three times, her fingers moving in identical, precise lines.
