My Family Tried to Evict Me from the Craftsman House My Grandparents Left Me

She carried a heavy black leather folder under her arm, clutching it tight against her ribs as if she were carrying a shield. Her lavender perfume immediately filled the warm air of the room, masking the familiar, comforting scent of beeswax and dried lemon peel that always lingered near the pantry.

“Good morning, sweet sister,” she said, her voice bright and theatrical as she walked toward the pine table where I had just finished my breakfast.

She set the folder down right next to the silver-plated kettle that had belonged to our grandmother. I watched her hand linger on the zipper of the folder, her long, manicured nails tapping a fast, nervous rhythm against the dark leather.

“What is that, Ashley?” I asked, keeping my voice even as I set my clean teacup on the counter.

“It is your future, Emily,” she said, offering a wide, affectionate smile that did not reach her eyes. She reached up to rearrange her blonde hair behind her shoulders, her fingers smoothing the strands with a quick, practiced sweep of her hand. “Or rather, a fresh start for both of us.”
