My Family Tried to Evict Me from the Craftsman House My Grandparents Left Me
I chewed a small bite of the pie, the sweetness thick on my tongue. For months, I had prepared myself for another lecture, another demand, or another empty threat about my grandfather’s wishes.
“I appreciate the pie, Mom,” I said.
“There is plenty more,” she said, her smile widening as she stood up to retrieve the ceramic dish from the counter. “I made it just for you, the way your grandmother used to write it down in her old blue binder.”
I looked at the floral plate, wondering if the lock on my grandfather’s desk drawer was still broken, or if they had already forgotten about their search for the missing deeds.
The silver-plated kettle on the stove sat cold and quiet, its polished surface reflecting the bright fluorescent lights of the ceiling.
“We want to support you,” Helen said, setting the ceramic dish back down with a soft click. “Your grandfather loved that house, and we know you do too.”
“I just want to keep it safe,” I said.
