“The joint account was created when I was twelve,” I said, keeping my voice calm and precise. “You put your name on it as a custodian, but every dollar in there came from my summer jobs and my grandfather’s birthday checks.”

“It belongs to the family now,” Charles said, his watch strap clicking as he shifted his weight. “You brought this on yourself by trying to lock us out of your grandfather’s estate.”

Ashley leaned forward, trying to catch my eye. “We are only doing what is best for everyone, Emily. You cannot manage that property alone, and this loan is going to fund an investment that will benefit all of us.”

Richard stopped tapping his pen. He picked up the document Ashley had provided, holding it up to the light to examine the signature line.

“This is a copy of the deed recorded on October fourteenth,” Richard said, his gravelly voice filled with a quiet, deliberate weight. “The signature here reads Emily Carter.”

“Yes,” Ashley said, rearranging her hair behind her ear. “She signed it in the kitchen on a Tuesday afternoon.”
