He rubbed his chin, looking down at his desk. “The management company changed the policy on short-term extensions last week. Because of the high demand this month, they are requiring a double security deposit for any lease under twelve months.”
“A double deposit?” I asked. “That would be eighteen hundred dollars.”
“I need the payment by tomorrow morning to keep the unit off the active list,” Mr. Henderson said. “Otherwise, I have to list it for the winter term.”
“I have been a tenant here for three years,” I said. “I have never missed a rent payment.”
“I know, Emily,” he said, his voice softening slightly. “But the owners are very strict about the new terms. If the deposit isn’t cleared by nine o’clock, the system automatically cancels the renewal.”
“Can I pay the standard rent now and the deposit next week?” I asked.
“I can’t do that,” Mr. Henderson said. “The system won’t let me generate the lease agreement without the full deposit code.”
