My Wealthy Grandmother Left Me a Single Brass Key and No Inheritance

I looked down at the top page, where my name was listed as the primary beneficiary of an escrow account.

“The cash savings were transferred to me so they could bypass the formal probate process entirely,” Linda explained, her hand resting on the paper. “If they had gone through the will, the estate taxes and the legal filings would have tied those funds up for eighteen months. I had legal instructions to pay off your loans the day after her passing.”

I turned the page and saw a receipt of payment, stamped by the lender, showing a balance of zero.

“And the rest?” I asked.

“The remaining forty thousand dollars is held in this escrow account for your personal living expenses over the next two years,” Linda said. “It is meant to ensure you do not have to worry about rent or groceries while you learn how to manage the foundation.”

I looked at the kitchen table, then at Linda, whose eyes were quiet and entirely devoid of the coldness I had spent years projecting onto her.
