“Yes,” I said. “And I got nothing. Mr. Bennett read the entire will, and my name was not even in the main bequest. He just looked at me and said there was no provision for me.”
“But your grandmother promised you,” Chloe said. “She told you that if you stayed and took care of her, she would make sure you were secure.”
“She lied,” I said, clearing my throat. “She wanted someone to clean her house and change her sheets for thirty-eight months without having to pay for a professional nurse. I spent every cent of my own money keeping that place running when her accounts were locked up, and now I have twenty-two dollars left to my name.”
“Oh, Emily,” Chloe said, her voice softening. “What are you going to do?”
“I do not know,” I said. “The landlord at my old building wants nineteen hundred dollars for the deposit. I cannot even afford a room for the night.”
“You can sleep on my couch for a few days,” Chloe said. “But you need to figure something out. What about your student loans?”
