My Wealthy Grandmother Left Me a Single Brass Key and No Inheritance

“She instructed me to give you this only when you stood in this room,” Mr. Bennett said, holding the envelope out to me.

“It contains the final instructions and her personal letter to you.”

I did not take it immediately, my hand still resting on the silver pocket watch on the table.

“And the money?” I asked. “The cash savings she left to Linda?”

“Every penny of those savings has a specific legal designation,” Mr. Bennett said, his voice losing some of its formal stiffness.

“But that is for Linda to explain when you return to the house.”

He placed the heavy cream envelope on top of the foundation charter, right next to my hand.

“You are the sole controlling beneficiary of the Vance empire, Emily,” he said, taking a step back toward the door.

“The stores are yours to run, and the foundation is yours to direct.”

I looked at the red wax seal, my grandmother’s sharp, elegant handwriting spelling out my name on the front of the envelope.
