My Wealthy Grandmother Left Me a Single Brass Key and No Inheritance

“She deserved more than this,” I said, looking at the wet earth piled beside the grave.

Linda did not turn her head to look at me.

“Margaret got exactly what she planned for,” Linda said.

I twisted the silver band on my finger, feeling a cold drop of water slide down my neck.

“What did she mean by that, Linda?” I asked.

The minister finished his short reading and closed his leather book with a soft, wet thud.

Linda stepped forward and placed a single white rose on the casket, her movements slow and deliberate.

She did not wait for me or Mr. Bennett, turning instead to walk down the narrow gravel path toward the waiting sedan.

“We have a great deal of paperwork to organize before Friday,” Mr. Bennett said, stepping closer to my side.

“I can help with the filing at the house,” I said.

“That will not be necessary, Emily,” he said. “Linda has everything under control.”

He nodded once, a formal gesture that felt more like a dismissal than a farewell.
