“Everything I built is tied to this family,” Margaret continued, her fingers resuming their rhythm on the cane. “I do not intend to let it crumble because of old grudges, but I must know you are capable of holding what is given.”

“I am trying,” I whispered.

“Do not try,” Margaret said, leaning back in her high-backed chair. “Simply do what is required of you without expecting applause.”

By eight o’clock, the dining room was dark again, and I was sitting with Margaret in the parlor while the wind rustled the dry leaves outside.

A single brass reading lamp cast a yellow circle over the small mahogany table beside her worn blue velvet chair.

She reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper, along with a heavy gold pen.

“Sign this,” she said, sliding the document across the polished wood toward my side of the table.

I unfolded the page, squinting at the small, dense type in the dim light of the parlor.

The words at the top of the white page read Designated Medical Representative and Deputy Trustee Proxy.
