“Do you?” I asked, walking over to the counter. “You are staying in this house, secure with nearly half a million dollars in the bank, while I have to figure out how to pay for gas to get to Columbus. You watched me spend every dollar of my savings on her medicine and her groceries when her personal accounts were frozen for probate, and you never said a word.”

“It does not matter anymore,” I said, looking at the worn blue velvet chair in the corner of the room where my grandmother used to sit when she was well enough to watch the garden. “The will is filed. Mr. Bennett made it perfectly clear. I am an outsider in my own family.”

“Margaret loved you, Emily,” Linda said, her fingers tightening against her apron. “She did what she had to do.”

“She left me ruined,” I said.
