My Wealthy Grandmother Left Me a Single Brass Key and No Inheritance

“You took on debt for a degree that yields no income,” she said, tossing the pad onto the low mahogany coffee table between us. “You are financially illiterate.”

“I was twenty-one when I signed those papers,” I said, my voice rising slightly. “I did not have anyone to guide me.”

“An explanation is not an excuse,” she said, her cane tapping once against the floorboard. “You never learned the value of a dollar, Emily.”

“I have twenty-two dollars left in my checking account,” I said.

She leaned back, her face settling into the cold, familiar mask she had worn since my parents died.

“Which is exactly what your decisions have earned you,” she said.

I stood up and walked out of the room before she could tell me to sit down.

The air on the back porch was cold enough to make my ears sting, but I needed to get away from the smell of her woodsmoke.
