“They are still there,” I said, looking out the window at the passing traffic. “Sixteen thousand dollars, and the deferment ends next month. I have wasted three years of my life for a promise that was never real.”

“You did what you thought was right,” Chloe said. “You could not have known she would be that cruel.”

“I should have known,” I said. “She was cold to my mother, and she was cold to me. I just wanted to believe that she finally saw me.”

The waitress came by and dropped the check on the table, the small piece of green paper landing between us with a soft flutter. Chloe reached for it immediately, pulling a ten-dollar bill from her wallet.

“I have to get back to the kids,” Chloe said, sliding out of the booth. “But you can follow me home in your car. We will get you set up on the basement sofa.”

“Thank you,” I said, my voice quiet.
