My Wealthy Grandmother Left Me a Single Brass Key and No Inheritance

“A promise to help her rob her own granddaughter?” I asked, my grip tightening on the black plastic of the phone. “I gave up my life to come here. I gave up my apartment, my jobs, my independence, all because she promised me that I would be taken care of.”

“You do not understand the whole story yet, Emily,” Linda said, her voice dropping to a whisper.

“Then tell me,” I said, leaning forward, my elbow brushing against the cold bowl of broth. “Tell me why my grandmother’s housekeeper inherits a fortune while her own flesh and blood is left with twenty-two dollars in her checking account. Tell me how that is fair.”

“I cannot do that,” Linda said. “But you must not leave here thinking Margaret did not care for you.”

“She had a strange way of showing it,” I said. “Leaving everything to the Oakhaven Community Trust and the rest to you. It feels like a final insult.”

“It is not an insult,” Linda said, her voice slow. “But I cannot explain the rest to you. Not tonight.”
