My Wealthy Grandmother Left Me a Single Brass Key and No Inheritance
I adjusted my grip on the receiver and cleared my throat before I spoke.
The line crackled with a low, steady hum before Linda answered. Downstairs, in her own quarters, she was likely sitting near her small writing desk, smoothing her clean apron over her knees even while holding the receiver.
“I need you to tell me the truth, Linda,” I said.
“I am only doing what Margaret instructed, Emily,” Linda said, her slow, deliberate tones coming through the receiver.
“She left you four hundred and fifty thousand dollars,” I said, my voice rising as I twisted the plain silver band on my finger. “That is her entire liquid cash savings. And Mr. Bennett stood in that office and read a document that leaves me without a single penny. You sat in that kitchen with me for thirty-eight months, Linda. You watched me clean her rooms, carry her trays, and wash her sheets, and you knew this was the plan.”
“It was not my place to discuss Margaret’s legal matters with you,” Linda said. “I made a promise to your grandmother, and I intend to keep it.”
