My Wealthy Grandmother Left Me a Single Brass Key and No Inheritance
“She talked about my mother tonight,” I said, sliding a teacup into the warm foam. “She actually smiled when she mentioned the roses. And she didn’t criticize my reading once.”
Linda stopped her towel mid-stroke, her eyes fixed on the dark window pane above the sink. “She has not spoken that name in five years, Emily.”
“Maybe she is finally letting me in,” I said, looking at the bubbles on my hands. “Maybe she sees that I am staying because I want to be here, not just because I have nowhere else to go.”
Linda set the plate down on the wooden rack with a dull thud. “Do not let your guard down in this house.”
“Why do you always say things like that?” I asked, turning to face her. “You have been with her forever. You know she is lonely under all that anger.”
“She is many things, but she is never simple,” Linda said, her slow voice dropping to a whisper. She looked toward the hallway as if she expected Margaret to be standing in the dark. “Just remember that every gift in this family comes with a bill attached.”
