My Wealthy Grandmother Left Me a Single Brass Key and No Inheritance

Linda, our housekeeper, was standing by the wooden railing, smoothing her gray cotton apron with both hands as she watched the gray clouds move over the maple trees.

“She enjoys it,” I said, leaning my forehead against the cold porch post. “She likes watching me scramble.”

Linda did not turn around, her hands continuing their steady, rhythmic stroke against her apron.

“Your grandmother is a particular woman, Emily,” Linda said, her slow, deliberate voice carrying the weight of thirty years in this house. “She does not do things without a reason.”

“She called me financially illiterate because I have college debt,” I said. “She has millions in the bank, and she treats me like a beggar who snuck in through the kitchen.”

“Wealth is not a soft cushion,” Linda said, turning her head slightly to look at me. “You do not understand the burden of it.”

“I would like the chance to try,” I said.

“That is exactly what she is afraid of,” Linda said.

She picked up her wicker basket of dried lavender and walked back inside, leaving the door unlatched.
