She leaned back against the floral cushions, her eyes remaining closed as the coughing subsided. Her hand reached out, cold and dry, and rested flat against the back of my fingers for three seconds before she pulled it away.

“That will do,” she said, her voice returning to its thin, clipped tone. “Go help Linda with the yard.”

I stood up, my knees making a small popping sound in the silence of the sunroom. The brief touch of her hand still felt warm against my skin, a tiny crack in the ice that had hung between us for months.

“And Emily,” she said, without opening her eyes.

“Yes, Grandmother?”

“Do not look so surprised when someone shows you a basic courtesy.”

I turned and walked out of the sunroom, leaving her alone with the quiet ticking of the small brass clock on the shelf.
