My Father Brought a Locksmith to Sell the Ranch I Bought

I stood up and walked over to the kitchen window. The wood of the sill was dry and worn, showing the pale grain where the sun had beaten against it for decades. I set the watch down on the flat pine surface, right where the morning light could hit the glass. The silver links settled with a soft clink against the wood. I left it there, facing the south meadow, and did not put it back on.

Under the kitchen counter, the metal filing box was locked. Inside it, the deed to the ranch sat beneath the legal documents Rachel had prepared. My name was the only name on the title now. There were no joint-use easements, no pending partition agreements, and no shared signatures with my brother. The county records had been cleared of the falsified power of attorney, and the local real estate office had removed the listing from their board.
