My Father Brought a Locksmith to Sell the Ranch I Bought

“He thinks he has a claim through Evan’s old filing,” Walt said. “He told the title agent you bought the land with family funds.”

“He used my trust to co-sign the failed bid,” I said. “That is not family money. That is my money.”

Walt stood up, his heavy belt creaking as he adjusted his holster. He walked to the gun rack behind his chair and checked the lock on the rack.

“He is planning something for this weekend,” Walt said. “He asked if my deputies would be out on the northern county roads after midnight.”

“What did you tell him?” I asked.

“I told him we go where the calls take us,” Walt said.

He turned back to me, his hand resting on the back of his chair.

“I can’t put a man at your gate twenty-four hours a day, Olivia,” he said. “The county doesn’t have the budget.”

“I do not need a man at the gate,” I said. “I just need you to answer when I call.”

“I always answer,” Walt said.
