My Father Brought a Locksmith to Sell the Ranch I Bought

“We have thirty days to vacate if the bank forecloses on the town house,” Linda said, her voice dropping lower as a deputy walked past us into the building. “Evan has nowhere to go, Olivia. He is staying in a motel by the highway.”

“He should have thought about that before he let Arthur cut my lock,” I said.

“It was his father’s idea,” she said. “You know how Arthur is. Once he gets an idea about what we are owed, no one can stop him.”

“You knew about the thirty thousand dollars,” I said.

Linda looked down at her boots, her grip tightening on the leather strap of her purse.

“Drop the civil claims,” she begged, looking up with wet eyes. “Let us keep the house in town. If you proceed with the lawsuit, we will have nothing left to move with.”

“The hearing is set for Friday,” I said, and turned my back to walk down the remaining steps.
