My Father Brought a Locksmith to Sell the Ranch I Bought
Two men in canvas coats were standing by the rack of heavy work gloves, pretending to inspect the leather palms. They stopped talking the moment the cash drawer slid open with a metallic ding.
“Arthur said you bought the old Miller place out from under your brother,” Clara said. Her voice was low, but it carried in the high-ceilinged room. “He said Evan had his heart set on starting his herd there.”
“The property was foreclosed in November,” I said.
Clara tore the receipt off the printer and did not hand it to me. She laid it on the counter between us, her thumb pressing down hard on the paper.
“Family is family, Olivia,” Clara said. “People around here do not forget who looks after their own.”
One of the men by the gloves cleared his throat and walked out the side door, letting the cold air sweep across my boots as the door swung shut.
I picked up the receipt and slid it into my pocket. “Neither do I,” I said.
