My Father Brought a Locksmith to Sell the Ranch I Bought

“He does not have the money for a ranch,” I said. “He has never had that kind of money.”

“The bank does not send foreclosure notices to a property unless that property was listed as the primary collateral or the physical residence of the bidder,” Walt said.

My brother had tried to buy this land before I ever saw the listing. He had used my new address on his paperwork, weeks before I bought the deed from the county.

“He failed the credit check,” Walt said. “That is why the auction went forward, and that is why you were able to buy it.”

I picked up the envelope from the table.

“This letter has my brother’s name on it, but the bank sent it to my gate,” I said.

Walt watched me. “Your father still has his business in Kiowa, does he not?”

“He does,” I said.

“Arthur always was a particular man about his holdings,” Walt said.

I stood up from the booth and pulled my coat around my shoulders. My family was not just angry that I had bought a ranch. They had been trying to buy this exact dirt.
