“But filing those motions takes time,” she said. “And it takes money. The local firm assisting me wants a five-thousand-dollar retainer just to enter their appearance and draft the response before the hearing.”

I reached into my pocket and touched my wallet. My savings were already low after the down payment, the surveyor’s fee, and the initial supplies for the cabin.

“They are trying to bankrupt me before I can even build a fence,” I said.

Rachel clicked her pen again.

“That is exactly what they are doing,” she said. “Arthur knows you do not have a corporate legal team behind you. He is betting you will run out of cash before the fifteenth.”

“I have thirty-two hundred dollars left in my checking account,” I said.

“I can defer my own fee,” Rachel said. “But the local filing fees and the process servers have to be paid in cash. We have to serve Arthur and Evan personally before we can get a judge to look at the forgery.”
