My Father Brought a Locksmith to Sell the Ranch I Bought

Linda stayed close to the passenger door of the sedan, clutching her leather handbag against her chest. She looked toward the dark driveway beyond the gate, her shoulders hunched. Evan tapped his boots against the hard ground, his breath coming in white plumes under the yellow glow of the security light.

I adjusted my mother’s silver watch strap, tightening it by one notch. The cold was beginning to seep through the floorboards of my truck where I sat with the lights killed, sixty yards up the rise. On the screen of my phone, the green recording light continued to blink.

“How long is this going to take?” Arthur asked, his voice coming through the small speaker with a sharp, metallic edge.

The locksmith did not look up from the keypad housing. “It is a six-digit digital lock, Mr. Carter. If you do not have the master bypass code, I have to clear the circuit board.”

“We have the authorization,” Arthur said, rubbing his temples. “I showed you the power of attorney. The county filed it last Tuesday.”
