My Father Brought a Locksmith to Sell the Ranch I Bought

“The regional office handles the defaults,” Vance said. “When a bid on a foreclosed property fails, the legal department notifies the bidder. If the bidder used a co-signer’s address on the primary application, the system uses that address.”

“My brother never lived at my ranch,” I said. “He has never even seen the gate.”

“But the application for the bid listed this parcel as the primary residence of the guarantor,” Rachel said. She leaned forward. “Whose name was listed as the guarantor on Evan Carter’s bid for parcel four?”

Vance did not answer. He stood up, his gray suit trousers pooling slightly at his ankles.

“I will need to retrieve the original paper file from the basement archives,” Vance said. “It will take some time.”

“We will wait,” Rachel said.

Vance left the glass office, shutting the door behind him. The latch clicked.

Through the glass, I could see the bank lobby. Two elderly women were standing at the teller window, talking to a young girl with red hair. A sheriff’s deputy stood near the front door, his hands resting on his belt.
