My Father Brought a Locksmith to Sell the Ranch I Bought

“The system has certain automated defaults,” Vance said.

“That is not an explanation,” Rachel said. “That is an excuse for a compliance failure.”

She clicked her silver pen three times. The sharp sound seemed to bounce off the glass walls of the office.

“Let us start with the mail,” Rachel said.

She reached back into her briefcase. She did not look at me. Her movements were precise, like she was listing supply inventory at Fort Carson. She pulled out the yellow-stickered foreclosure envelope I had found in my mailbox two weeks ago. She laid it flat on the desk between Vance and herself.

“This was delivered to my client’s ranch gate,” Rachel said. “It has Evan Carter’s name on it. Explain why the regional bank’s legal department sent a default notice for Evan to Olivia’s physical address.”

Vance picked up the envelope by the corner, as if it were wet. He turned it over, looking at the yellow routing sticker.
