My Father Brought a Locksmith to Sell the Ranch I Bought

Walt took another sip of his coffee. He set the mug down with a small clink. “Only two went to the courthouse steps. Your ranch was the big one. The other was a five-acre lot with a mobile home near the river.”

“Did anyone else bid on my place?” I asked.

Walt tilted his head, his eyes narrowing slightly as he looked at the envelope. “There was a secondary bidder who tried to secure the note before the county auction. A private party. They put down a deposit, but the financing fell through at the last minute.”

“Who was the bidder?” I asked.

Walt moved his coffee mug to the side. “The paperwork listed an LLC, but the local broker said it was a young guy from out of town. He had a family co-signer.”

I lifted my hand from the envelope. Walt looked down at the name typed through the plastic window. He did not say anything for a long moment. He just rubbed his thumb against his temple, then tilted his hat back again.

“Your brother,” Walt said.
