“I am not leaving this house,” I said. “And I am not turning off the cameras.”

“I do not want you to,” Rachel said. “But we need the sheriff to see the entry in real time. If he does not witness the trespass, it is just one more property dispute between relatives.”

She closed her briefcase, the brass latches snapping shut with a double click.

“I am driving back to Craig to file the response,” she said. “Keep your phone charged.”

I watched her small gray sedan back down the drive, its tires crunching on the frozen gravel. The silence came back into the kitchen, heavy and cold.

The county sheriff’s office smelled of wet floor wax and old coffee. Walt Hensley, the county sheriff, sat behind a desk that had been scraped down to the gray metal at the corners.

I laid the manila folder on the green blotter between us.

“These are the certified transaction logs from the Craig bank,” I said. “The manager verified the transfer yesterday.”
