Three Baby Cribs and a Missing Set of Car Keys
“He took both sets of keys before he got into his friend’s car,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
Shaun stood by the refrigerator, his boots leaving faint dusty prints on the linoleum. He did not raise his voice or pace the room, but his right foot began to tap a steady, heavy rhythm against the floor.
“Are you sure they are not in the bedroom?” Shaun asked.
“I checked the dresser,” I said, twirling my gold wedding ring around my finger until the skin turned red. “The spare silver key ring is gone from the velvet box in my top drawer. He made sure I could not leave.”
Shaun reached into his pocket and pulled out his own set of keys, letting them jingle in his palm. “We do not need his permission to go to the store, Chloe.”
“The babies have another developmental checkup next week,” I said. “And the special formula for Bodhi is down to the last two cans.”
“I will drive you wherever you need to go,” Shaun said.
