Three Baby Cribs and a Missing Set of Car Keys

He looked completely unburdened by the reality waiting for him back in Ohio, his smile wide and easy.

I stared at his face, trying to find any trace of the man who had promised to be my partner.

I set the phone down, face up, on the glass table.

My mother arrived at six, carrying a glass casserole dish wrapped in a damp kitchen towel. We sat at the dining room table, the quiet of the house broken only by the occasional soft cry from the nursery.

The steam from the green bean casserole rose between us, smelling of garlic and fried onions.

“He sent this,” I said, sliding the phone across the dark wood toward her.

My mother adjusted her glasses, leaning forward to study the glowing screen. Her lips thinned into a straight line as she took in the image of Ryan on the beach.
