Three Baby Cribs and a Missing Set of Car Keys
“Or she might want her own dress,” I said, closing the zipper with a sharp metallic slide.
“Your grandmother would want you to keep it,” Martha said softly, adjusting her glasses with her thumb.
“My grandmother did not know how this would end,” I said, reaching into the dresser drawer for my sweaters.
The sweaters were thick and heavy, taking up too much room in the green suitcase I had borrowed from Shaun.
“Did you find the papers from the lawyer?” Martha asked, looking around the room.
“They are in my bag,” I said. “Evelyn said she would have the final drafts ready by tomorrow afternoon.”
“And the movers?” Martha asked.
“They are confirmed for Friday at nine in the morning,” I said, folding a gray cardigan and pressing it down into the corner of the suitcase.
“Where are we going to get the six hundred?” Martha asked, her voice dropping to a whisper.
“I have some jewelry,” I said, not looking at her. “The gold bracelet Ryan gave me for our first anniversary.”
