Three Baby Cribs and a Missing Set of Car Keys

“I had to,” I said, watching Bodhi finally close his eyes. “There was no other choice after the bank told me about the account.”

“He will try to tell you there was,” Martha said. She looked toward the hallway where the floorboards were quiet. “He always has an explanation that makes him look like the one who suffered.”

“He spent three thousand dollars on a rental beach house,” I said. “The bank statement showed he withdrew it the morning before he left. He did not even try to hide it.”

Martha did not look surprised, but her mouth tightened into a thin line. “He never thought you would look at the statement. He thought you would stay in that kitchen and wait.”

“The papers are ready,” I said. “I just need to sign them.”

“We should go downstairs before they wake up,” Martha said, gesturing toward the door.

I pulled the nursery door closed until there was only a tiny crack of light left on the hall floor.
