Three Baby Cribs and a Missing Set of Car Keys
“You do?” I asked.
“Of course I do,” he said, his voice dropping into a soft, quiet rhythm I had not heard since before the triplets were born. “I know things have been incredibly stressful lately with the feeding schedules and the sleep deprivation, and I want to make it up to you.”
I twirled my gold wedding ring around my finger, my skin cold despite the afternoon heat.
“The doctor said Soleil is gaining weight,” I said.
“That is great news, honey, really,” he said. “Listen, I want to take you out to that Italian place on Friday night when I get back, just the two of us, while your mom watches the babies.”
I looked down at my shoes, my thumb still tracing the metal band on my left hand.
“I do not think we have the budget for that, Ryan,” I said.
“Do not worry about the money,” he said, his tone perfectly smooth, like a salesman closing a deal. “I have everything under control, Chloe. In fact, I was thinking we could take a family trip next month, just the five of us.”
