Three Baby Cribs and a Missing Set of Car Keys

Martha stood by the first crib, holding Soleil against her shoulder while the baby drifted off. The room was quiet except for the steady sound of the babies breathing.

“They slept through the drive over,” Martha whispered, adjusting her glasses with her free hand. She peered down at the sleeping baby’s face.

“Bodhi is still awake,” I said, pointing to the middle crib where he lay staring at the wooden slats.

Martha laid Soleil down on the firm mattress, smoothing the light sheet over her small back. “He is just watching the shadows on the wall.”

I checked the safety gate Shaun had screwed into the doorframe, tugging on the wooden bar to make sure it was secure. “If they start crawling early, we will need another gate at the bottom of the stairs.”

“We will get one next weekend,” Martha said. She stepped away from the crib and adjusted her glasses again, her fingers smudging the corner of the lens. “You have done more in three days than most people do in a month, Chloe.”
