I pressed play, and his face filled the screen, tanned and smiling against a backdrop of white sand and bright blue water.
“Hey guys,” he said in the video, squinting slightly into the camera as he panned it around to show the empty beach behind him. “Just wanted to say goodnight to my beautiful wife and my three little angels. I am sitting here by myself watching the waves, wishing you were all here with me.”
He blew a kiss toward the camera before the screen went black.
I stared at the dark reflection of my own face in the glass.
He was wearing a brand-new pair of sunglasses, the kind with the silver logo on the temple that cost over two hundred dollars.
I set the phone down and looked at the half-empty cardboard box on the floor.
The digital display on the microwave in the kitchen let out a single beep, signaling the hour.
I walked into the dining room and stood before the cherry-wood desk where we kept the tax documents and the household files.
