Three Baby Cribs and a Missing Set of Car Keys
“Is there a problem?” I asked, twirling my gold wedding ring around my finger.
Linda shifted in her chair and looked at the screen again. She did not look directly at me.
“I can try to run this from your checking account instead, if you like,” she said, her voice dropping to a quieter register.
“No,” I said, my finger tightening on my ring. “The checking is low. I keep the grocery money in the savings. There should be three thousand dollars in there.”
“The savings account has a balance of eight dollars and forty cents,” Linda said. She kept her eyes on the screen, her expression carefully neutral.
The room seemed to grow very cold. I pressed my hand flat against the hard stone of the counter.
“That is not possible,” I said. “The balance on this account was three thousand dollars yesterday morning.”
“There was an online transfer yesterday afternoon at four o’clock,” Linda said. “The entire balance, minus the minimum required to keep the account active, was moved to an external account.”
“What external account?” I asked.
