Three Baby Cribs and a Missing Set of Car Keys

I watched them pull away, the truck turning slowly at the corner of the cul-de-sac and disappearing behind the maple trees.

I walked back into the house, my flats making a sharp, hollow sound on the hardwood as I made my way to the kitchen.

The back door was shut, the lock sliding into place with a dry, metallic click when I turned the brass knob.

I walked back to the front hall, looking at the empty space where the coat rack had been, and then stepped out onto the concrete porch.

I reached for the front door handle, pulling the heavy wood closed until the latch caught with a solid, heavy thud.

The small brass key was in my fingers, cold and sharp against my palm.

I turned the key in the lock, hearing the deadbolt slide into the frame, and then pulled it out, leaving the house completely silent behind me.

The heavy metal ring of keys felt cold in my hand as I walked up the cracked concrete steps of the Elm Lane house the next morning.
