Three Baby Cribs and a Missing Set of Car Keys
“I told you I was taking the car to the shop eventually,” he said, his voice dropping into that defensive tone he used when he was challenged. “I must have slipped both rings into my pocket by mistake when I was packing my bags.”
“You took them before your friend picked you up,” I said, watching the sunlight hit the empty kitchen table. “You knew I would have no way to leave the house.”
“You stay home all day, Chloe, so why do you need to drive anyway?” he said.
“I need to buy formula,” I said, my knuckles white against the edge of the counter. “And the babies need to be able to go to the clinic if there is an emergency.”
“You have plenty of food in the pantry,” he said, and I could picture him rubbing the back of his neck, the way he always did when he was avoiding the truth. “Stop trying to find things to complain about. I will be home on Friday afternoon.”
“I cannot do this without a car, Ryan,” I said.
